Metsovo

Metsovo is a small market town of Epirus and it is situated among the mountains of Pindos, the biggest mountain chain in Greece, at an altitude of 1100-1300 meters. It is between Ioannina (on the northern side) and Meteora.

Metsovo becomes an attraction during the winter period, since there is a ski resort in the area. What is more, the mountainous land and the harsh winter in Metsovo and in the wider area as well offer the most ideal conditions for winter sports.

The traditional hospice “ARKA“, which is located in the central square of Metsovo, has studios that consist of two rooms and one single studio with many comforts such as television, autonomous heating, kitchen, refrigerator, mini-lounge, bathroom/WC and access to the Internet. Moreover, one of the double studios has a fireplace. The hospice is open throughout the whole year and it is at your disposal in order to offer you its hospitality.

Metsovo as well as its surrounding villages are situated at the slopes of the mountains of Pindos, as if they were hidden among beech-trees and fir-trees, in a landscape that is characterized by the wild beauty and extends from Mount Lakmos up to Flenga and the passage of Katara.

The area, the landscape

The wider area of Metsovo is characterized by a multifarious bas-relief which is shown by the dense and profound hydrographical network. As far as the administration is concerned, the area is divided into two Municipalities, the Municipality of Metsovo and the Municipality of Egnatia and into one Community, Milia. All around the area there are high mountains which form parts of the mountain chain of Northern Pindos, such as Lakmos or Peristeri (2.295 meters of altitude) on the south side, Mavrovouni (2.159 meters of altitude) on the north side, the mountains Zygos (1.746 meters of altitude) on the east side and Tsouka- Rossa (1.987 meters of altitude) on the northwest side. In the area of Metsovo we can find the five most important hydrological basins in Greece: the hydrological basins of Arachthos, Acheloos, Pineios, Aliakmonas and Aoos. Metsovitikos River (which is a tributary of Arachthos) rises in Metsovo, while at a smaller distance Acheloos, Aoos, as well as the tributaries of Pineios and Aliakmonas (Venetikos) rise respectively.



Moreover, many rivers and streams enrich the river network, reinforced in recent years the pond Aoou, located between areas Greveniti, Chrysovitsi and Metsovo.The lowlands of the region are few and mainly located along the river Metsovitikos and small plateaus in the areas of Metsovo and apple, used as pasture. The remaining parts of the area consisting of dense woods and bare mountain slopes.The area is geologically belongs to the Pindos zone with dominant rocks of limestone and the flysch ofeiolithous. The climate characterized by cool to cold winters with prolonged rains and rich in the spring and summers are relatively warm with enough rain.

Activities of the residents

The most common activities of the residents of Metsovo are the following: animal husbandry, cheese making, winemaking, forestry, folk art, textile industry, and the construction of barrels and beehives and tourism, which has developed notably during the recent years.
